STUDENTS PLAN NATIONWIDE PROTESTS AGAINST ASUU STRIKE

Plans may be underway by some Nigerian students to organise from Tuesday, a mass protest aimed at highlighting the woes bed eviling public education in the country.

Organised by the Joint ActionFront (JAF), the protesting students in the South-West zone may block all roads leading to Lagos State tomorrow.
According to JAF, the protests, which will kick off at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) office at Yaba, Lagos at 8 a.m., will also include zonal rallies in Kano, Ibadan, Owerri, Calabar, Abuja, among others.

According to JAF, the aim is to draw attention to the bleak future that awaits Nigerian children due to the neglect of public education, "while children of top politicians and government officials are trained in private schools in Nigeria and abroad with funds looted from public coffers."

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had, on July 2, declared an indefinite strike over unresolved issues contained in the 2009 FG/ASUU Agreement. The union took the decision "after exhausting all available avenues," when the Federal Government breached a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) they both signed in January 2011.

One of the contentious issues was the non-payment of Earned Allowances. But the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, swiftly criticised ASUU's action, describing it as unfortunate and capable of destroying the university system. Okojie told The newsmen: "They (universities teachers) get their salaries. On the issue of allowances, why can't they persevere? The government did not say it would not pay. What we said was that not all lecturers are entitled to earned allowances. The figure they (ASUU) came up with was huge and we said there was a need for harmonisation, because not all of them were entitled to it. We needed to determine which lecturer deserves to get the Earn Allowance."

However, a meeting organised by the Federal Ministry of Education to resolve the issue ended in a deadlock. A senior government official was quoted as saying that it was impossible for the Federal Government to implement the MoU. The union has also vowed not to suspend the strike until its demands are met.

Fake college of medicine shut in Lagos

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, (MDCN), during the week closed down the Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (FEDCAM), Abdul-Salau, Isheri Olofi, Idimu, Lagos.
The action, Saturday Independent learnt, was as a result of tip-off by a concerned Nigerian.
According to the Head of Department (HOD) Inspectorate of MDCN, Dr. Henry Okwuokenye, the provost of the school, Dr. Idowu Ogunkoya does not have the licence to practise. He said the school is not registered with MDCN, and that its faculties and curriculum have been accredited.
He said: “A good Nigerian wrote us a letter that there is a fake medical school that is training people in this place. So we did investigation for two months until we were able to locate the place and confirmed that it is true. We contacted the state Ministry of Health and we came on a visit and found students in class receiving lectures as alternative medical medicine doctors.”
Okwuokenye said registering with MDCN was one of the conditions for running such a facility.
According to Okwuokenye, “Before anyone practises in this country, no matter where you are trained, you must come to our office to get a licence to practise and every year, you must renew it. This is aside the full licence registration a doctor must have to practise as a doctor. More so, for a medical school to run in Nigeria, we also are saddled with the responsibility of accrediting it to do such and again the curriculum, which is content of knowledge to pass to people for them to become doctors, is also provided by my office but the management did not do any of these things.”
The school’s provost, Dr. Ogunkoya, however, insisted that the school is not illegal, adding that he started operation in 2001 and is still in the registration process.
According to him, “We have more than 3,500 alternative practitioners in Nigeria as of today and they have only registered eight so far. So it is not my fault that I don’t have a licence but we are making a good contact with the minister about reopening and doing alternative medicine colleges very well in Nigeria.
‘’Prof Atilade was the federal representative of alternative medicine with the MDCN, during his time; he spent about two or three years. They only registered two people. Now they are working out our registration.”
He further claimed that ‘’this school was actually founded by the Council of Physician and Alternative Medicine.  We started with natural college of complementary and alternative medicine.  It was in year 2004; we agitated for the government to take the school up because there is nothing like that in the country. By 2004, they appointed Prof Atilade as the registrar of this college. We were communicating very well with the federal government in Abuja.
‘’We were trying to make sure that the college is approved because definitely, we know the standard for accreditation. By 2007, Professor Atilade was appointed as the rector and Dr. Ayodele Akinipe was appointed as the registrar by the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja. Dr. Awe and others came and changed the name of the college to Federal College of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. Having done that, they said the government would give us a budget, which they did in year 2007.
‘’So, we gave the then registrar all the documents to go and process in Abuja. We gave him altogether about N450,000. He processed the budget, got it out and they called Prof Atilade to come and be a signatory. He signed one paper from the Central Bank, apparently, before he got back to Lagos. The name was changed.
“They formed another federal college of complementary and alternative medicine in Abuja. They rented an apartment and started running it. I don’t know how he did it. He just told them in Abuja that there is nothing like again that in Nigeria. Since then we have been agitating. God being who He is, the college was closed in 2010 because they were running a degree programme, as by then, they were not accredited. Thereafter, people from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) came and arrested the six of us because a petition was written against us.
‘’This is just a clinic to demonstrate to our students. We can’t run a medical school without a clinic. We are using what we have. A budget was given to us but they did not give it to us and it is up to N300million. The federal government releases it every year.”

FG offers scholarship to 36 N’Delta youths to study in US

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Mr Kingsley Kuku, said on Friday that 36 youths had been enrolled for formal education in the University of Alabama, in the U.S.
Kuku made the disclosure at the Offshore Orientation and Departure Programme, organised for the beneficiaries in Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the beneficiaries are the latest group of participants in the scholarship scheme, being organised for youths in the Niger Delta.
The beneficiaries were enrolled to study Computer Science, Physical Therapy, Political Science,  Pharmacy, Criminology and Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Administration.
Other courses are Business Management, Communications Technology, Elementary Education/Teaching, Biology/Biological Science, Medicine, Accounting, Banking/Financial Support Services, Economics, Sociology, Forensic Chemistry  and Engineering.
Kuku, who was represented by the Head of Reintegration Department, Mr. Larry Pepple, said the purpose was to build the capacity of youths in the Niger Delta.
The presidential aide urged the beneficiaries to “do exploits’’ while pursuing their educational career. “Do exploit so that we will celebrate you.
The only way to achieve that is through hard work.’’ He said the beneficiaries were given scholarships because their communities were affected by militancy and oil exploration. Mr. Mologe Freeman, the Head, Post Training in the Office of the Special Adviser, urged the beneficiaries to adhere strictly to the laws of the host country.
Freeman also urged them to desist from committing crimes, drug addiction and associating with bad elements. “These vices can derail your educational programme,’’ he stated.
The Chief Security Officer of the office, Lt.-Col. Adewale Adekoya, urged the beneficiaries not to possess arms and ammunition or other dangerous weapon.
Adekoya said the beneficiaries must not plan or incite others to riot and should desist from causing obstruction to the activities of the university.

Shocking! A corper Burnt to death by jealous lover

A 23-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Buguma area of River State has been burnt to death by her male lover, after she ended their affairs over the man’s jealous attitude.
The victim, Miss Winifred Amarachi Oke, who graduated from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State with Second Class upper division, in Home Economics and was posted to River to serve, died of first degree burns she sustained in the mid night attack by her lover.
The deceased was a native of Amawom, Oboro in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State. Meanwhile, the Police in Port Harcourt, River State capital, are currently questioning the suspect, whose name was given as Ogbonna, an undergraduate of Michael Okpara Univeristy, who hails from Ovim, in Isikwuato LGA of Abia State, on why he set her female lover ablaze.
Winifred’s father, 53-year-old Okechukwu Onyeze Oke, told Daily Sun, amid tears, that they did not know Ogbonna, as he had not come to them to ask for the hand of their daughter in marriage. He wondered why the man should be jealous, to the point of wasting the life of their promising daughter, who they laboured for 23 years to bring up.
The man stated that he learnt that whenever Ogbonna saw their daughter with anyone he would go violent and as a result, their daughter asked him to stay away from her, as she could no longer tolerate the level of jealousy he was exhibited. He said that Winifred was rushed to University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, after she was burnt in her room, where she died days after.
He told Daily Sun that the body of his daughter was transferred from the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia on Wednesday evening, August 8, with an NYSC ambulance. Mr. Oke said that Ogbonna allegedly poured petrol into the room Winifred was sleeping, through window, at about 1am and threw in a lighted match, thereby setting the room ablaze.
He said that when the fire raged, Winifred’s neigbours raised the alarms, leading to rescue efforts. When the fire was put out, the lady had been burnt from waist downwards.
According to Oke: “On July 19, somebody called my number at about some minutes to 7am, saying I should come to Port Harcourt, that my daughter had an accident. I inquired of the type of accident. He said that she had an accident in Port Harcourt. You know, she is a youth corps member.
I tried further to find out. He said somebody poured petrol into her apartment and set the house ablaze. “Before doing that, he (the suspect) first locked the door from outside and poured petrol into the room through the window, at about 1am and set her room ablaze. We had to go. Her mother had to go first. When we got there, she (Winifred) was critical. She had severe burn.
The fire burnt her waist down to legs and other parts of the body, including the tummy. She was taken to the UPTH by her fellow corps members. She was taken to the theatre for plastic surgery on her legs and she remained in the intensive care unit (ICU). She was on oxygen until Wednesday, July 31, 2013, when she died about 5.30am.
The suspect has been apprehended by the police. Oke said the family could not understand why the suspect could go to the extent of killing Winifred, when they don’t even know him as a prospective husband to her.
