The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged
members of the Academic Staff Union of Univeristies (ASUU) to call off
their on-going strike and return to negotiating table with the
government just as he condoled Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) over
the recent death of three of its officials, in a ghastly motor accident
in Osun State.
The Sultan who is the Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)
Zaria stated this on Sunday during a Ramadan breakfast he organised for
Sokoto working journalists and a 20-man delegation of the peace and
reconciliation foundation of Nigeria.
He illustrated the poor state of the Nigerian universities with ABU
Zaria which had to raise funds from public donations to meet up with
some of its requirements.
He said the donation of N2.5 billion worth of building to structure
to ABU by former Defence minister, General Theophillus Danjuma was one
of the measures aimed at bridging the gap between what the universities
want and what was being provided by the government.
The Sultan said traditional rulers would offer to collect the copies
of agreement purportedly reached between ASUU and Federal Government to
negotiate on behalf of members of the union.
